The Project
In 2018 I was awarded a grant from the Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge Detroit. My Proposal was to create a multi-disciplinary “core sample” of Detroit’s extraordinary history by collaborating with local artists and experts. Original music by Dave McMurray and Alice Sun, with Jeff Canady, Isis Damil, Allen Dennard, Djallo Djakate, Larry Fratangelo, Pathe Jessi, Ibrahim Jones, Maurice O’Neil, Luis Resto, Meg Rohrer, and Cecelia Sha. Sound Engineering by Salar Ansari. Narration by Marsha Music, with Phillip brown, David Lowrie, and Rosebud Bear Schneider.
The Burton Collection at The Detroit Public Library, The Walter P. Reuther Library, and The Detroit Historical Society provided invaluable research and images for the collages marking each of the stations. None of this would have been possible without the funding provided by The Knight Foundation, Alex and Marie Manoogian Foundation, Beatrice & Reymont Paul Foundation, and the many friends who supported the project. Special thanks to Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings for their support as my fiduciary partner. It is my sincere hope that the music and spoken word of this “sound walk” provides you with information, some entertainment, and a bit of inspiration going forward.
