Long before European settlers arrived, the indigenous Anishinaabe people were the careful stewards of Michigan and its countless lakes and waterways. They lived here for hundreds of years, sustaining a symbiotic relationship with the earth and the life forms that animate it. 

The indigenous population still considers these ancestral lands and waters to be sacred, and feel a deep-rooted responsibility to protect them.
